In March Suffolk Childcare Agency were invited to be present at a Norfolk Jobs Fair, run by the Local Authority in Thetford, at The Carnegie Room, IP24 2DS.  It was a great opportunity to meet job seekers and Government Job Centre staff and display the options a career in childminding can present as part of the ‘Well Being Project’.

For our team it was interesting day as we had no previous experience of Jobs Fairs, so had no idea what to expect.  We had been invited by the Local Authority to give guidance into the benefits and career potential that being a Childminder offers.  Something Suffolk Childcare Agency is very passionate about.  With an increasingly growing need for effective early years childcare in the East Anglia regions, childminding is a career with true room for development and success.

We were really pleased to meet the Mayor (cue our awkward posed photo in front of our stand!) and explain the role Childcare Agencies have in encouraging more people into the profession, providing effective Quality Assurance Visits at intervals unsustainable by Ofsted, and giving training and support that Local Authorities may not have budgets to offer.  To say we really believe in our capacity to encourage and assist people into the childcare profession is an understatement!

On initially being asked to attend the Jobs Fair, we did wonder how we could realistically encourage engagement from those looking to return to work.  However, with a bit of team discussion we realised that Childminding is a tremendously flexible career.  Our own team is made up of people who came from backgrounds in Accounting, Auxiliary Nursing and other industries.  Important to know, most of them came to Childminding as a route back into work after having time off to have their own families.

With the Government’s guidance on the remit of Childcare Agencies, getting started in childminding couldn’t be easier.  A built-in training provider for Continued Professional Development – offering the mandatory and early years courses relevant to you.  A support system for your policy and regulatory paperwork.  A marketing and publicity tool, promoting your services in your area and matching you to parent enquiries.  Suffolk Childcare Agency do all of this and offer a one-to-one and group support meeting, and we are proud to say our training is offered at a discounted rate to those registering under our Agency.

When it comes to flexible working Childminding can be one of the most adaptable career choices.  Working from your own home on the days and hours to suit you, now that is real flexitime!  Running your own business, managing your own income and outgoings – childminding gives you control and autonomy to make the decisions that work for you.  Plus there are so many training opportunities that you’ll always have the opportunity to grow and progress.  This is not your average stuck in a rut career.

If asked, how would you describe a career in Childminding, it would be hard to say ‘the Jobs Fair!’

After all as East Anglia’s Premier Childcare Agency we are passionate about childcare and childminders and we believe Childminding is an amazing career for new and existing childminders alike.
